At approximately five by five feet, the volumetric “Gold Band” is, to date, the largest printed work to be done by the artist entirely in metal. Each work of art on aluminum is hand-cut and hand-sculpted; sections are riveted together with copper wire. Existing only in this form, the exquisite composition of patterns was created specifically for this project. The resulting “Gold Band” shimmers and is a representative example of the artist’s incomparable sculpture, which draws from Western artistic traditions and non-Western decorative art forms, among which are ethnic Ghanaian textiles, intricate Byzantine mosaics, and ornamental Indo-Islamic tilework.
